Linkin Park might not be one of my favourite bands. I only know like three or four songs by them and they didn’t have a huge impact on my childhood; nevertheless, I still know quite a few people that are huge fans of their music. Mostly because their songs helped them go through some very hard times.
Reading the news about Chester Bennington… I don’t even know what to say…
It’s shocking and heartbreaking to know that he couldn’t fight against his depression any longer and decided to end it all completely. His life, specifically his childhood, was very fucked up, to say the least. It doesn’t even matter what exactly made him take this step but it’s fair to assume that his hopelessness took over him.
Chester was a fighter, like many other people who aren’t even as famous as him. Mental health has become much more of an issue throughout the past years, yet still some people don’t take it seriously; mostly because it’s not as visble as, let’s say, a broken foot. It’s much more complicated than that.
People need to realise that mental health is just as important as physical health. It can affect anyone, regardless of gender, sexuality or ethnicity.
Don’t close your eyes. One of your friends or family members might be struggling right now without you knowing about it. Don’t force them to talk about their problems, instead offer them support whenever they need it. They will open up once they feel comfortable talking about it. You can lead them out of this hell, so don’t turn your back on them. Show them that at least one person cares about them and that this world isn’t as bad as their inner voice might try to tell them.
If you are one of those who are struggling right now: I believe in you. You can and will get out of this prison cell, just keep on fighting – it definitely will be worth it!
My heart goes out to Chester’s family, friends and all of his fans. May he be rocking in heaven now.
