How to Calculate APL (Average Picture Level) of a Picture Using Photoshop?

Some days ago is I searched for some ways to calculate APL of a picture. Unfortunately I don’t find a single simple way to calculate it.

So opened Photoshop and said maybe the best photo editing software has a tools for this issue. After some efforts, I found a simple way to calculate APL.

So this is the steps:

1) Open your desired picture in Photoshop

2) If you don't have histogram tool, enable it from Window menu and select histogram

3) Now after opened histogram tool, note value of Mean

4) Because of this parameter’s maximum value is 255 and we want APL in percent, you can use this simple equation to convert it to percent:

APL (%) = (Mean value × 100) / 255
