Books can be a wonderful companion. They make you learn new things, explore another world and think beyond the boundaries you have set for yourself. Like Charles W. Eliot once said

Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teacher.

Today people prefer binge-watching shows or scrolling social media over reading but the joy of book reading is still unmatched. Here’s why I think reading is a really cool habit

1. Master the language

Now, this is a fact known to all. Every book nerd has great command of the language they read in. Books introduce you to new exotic words and also help you learn how they are used. Through reading, you can brush up on your grammar; so much so that you might end up becoming a grammar nazi.

2. A perfect companion

I’ll tell you how reading is better than watching movies. To watch a movie you’d need a perfect internet connection. If you want to watch a movie during your bus ride back home you must have your AirPods with you, or other passengers on the bus might not be very happy. But if you are a reader you just need your book or the newspaper, whatever you like to read. Convenient isn’t it?

3. Change in mindset

The world of reading is an incredible source of knowledge. Whether fiction or non-fiction; books make you think and a thinking mind is always better than an idle one.

4. Chance to learn

Each time you pick something good to read, it is highly likely you will have learned a thing or two when you put it down. By reading, one can learn a lot about life, relationships, world politics, and scientific theories. A few months back, I read a book called Unposted Letters. This book is great if you feel low or stuck. It teaches you how even little things can be a source of happiness.

I hope by this point you are convinced that reading is a great hobby. If you are new to reading and require guidance on where to start, I would advise you to

· Spare time for reading. Initially, it might feel like a task but once you start enjoying there is no looking back; provided you picked something good to read. Picking the right stuff to read is important as J.K Rowling says:

If you don’t like to read, you haven’t found the right book.

· Follow goodreads.com.

· Find a reading partner. Share what you read and learned. Even better, join a book club

· Start with your favorite genres. Whether it is politics, romance, or greek methodology that you like, read what you find interesting. Gradually explore other genres too.

Lastly, it’s ok if reading is not your thing. The goal is to be a better and kinder human every day, reading or not, doesn’t really matter.

But hey, some of the coolest people I ever came across were avid readers. Just saying!
