Change within Organizations

Organizations must be able to adapt to deal with certain problems. An organizations ability to change an overcome these obstacles determines its survival. How organizations cope with adversity is largely dependent on its management. In lecture we discussed several ways that managers will relay information to other organization members.

  1. Spray & Pray: Management overloads members with information, letting members sift through and determine which info is important or not. One of the least effective approaches.
  2. Tell & Sell: Managers select certain core issues and then explain the rational behind their chosen solution.
  3. Underscore & Explore: Fundamental issues linked to success are identified and employees are allowed to think of means to meet an end result.
  4. Identify & Reply: Management listens and acknowledges concerns of employees, then responds to the issues.
  5. Withhold & Uphold: As much information as possible is withheld by the management. Questions from employees are answered by defense of the managements decisions. Also noted as one of the least effective approaches.

Having these different approaches to change categorized makes it easier to identify these models in real-world scenarios.
