Unleash Your Inner Developer Beast

Some of the best tools to help you achieve your developer goals

As a developer, we’re always looking for the best sites and tools to get the job done or learn more about a new programming language or framework that’s becoming the new “hot”. Everyone has a method to their own madness, but I’d like to share some of my favorites that help keep my skills sharp.

  1. Podcasts

Podcasts are the best way to learn more about what’s going on in our world. You can listen to them anywhere and anytime. I listen to them on the way to work and on my way home. When I’m in the car alone I catch up on the ones I missed (don’t want to bore my wife). They’re a really great way to learn about new things and you can download them for those long flights and road trips.

Here are a few of my favorites:

ShopTalk Show

The Ruby on Rails Podcast

The Ruby Rogues

JavaScript Jabber

CodeNewbie

Developer Tea

The Bike Shed

2. Blogs

Blogs are an awesome way to keep your ear to the streets about design and development. Here are a few of my daily reads:

Webdesigner Depot (http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/)

Codrops (http://tympanus.net/codrops/)

CSS-Tricks.com (https://css-tricks.com/)

Scotch.io (https://scotch.io/)

Todd Motto (https://toddmotto.com/)

A List Apart (http://alistapart.com/)

3. Developer Reference Tools

I love my developer tools, and I am always looking for new tools to improve my workflow or make a complex process easier, which helps when you need to build things fast. Here are a few that I go to on the regular:

OverAPI (http://overapi.com/)

JavaScripting (http://www.javascripting.com)

CodePen (http://codepen.io/)

Web Dev Checklist (http://webdevchecklist.com/)

Bento (https://bento.io/)

Unsplash (https://unsplash.com/) — the best place for free images.

I hope you find these helpful. If you have favorites of you own please share them, I’m always looking for something new.

Keep coding. :)
