I have used Lonely Planet on many occasions since the first time I bought one, which was for my first trip to Japan in 1982.
There have been two features that were most important and useful to me: finding a decent hotel that had been vetted by Lonely Planet and having maps with me that I could use as soon as I arrived.
In recent years, my travel habits have changed. Instead of hotels I now stay in Airbnb apartments (50 rentals in 24 countries since I first began using it in 2011). Additionally, I now take my smartphone with me wherever I go, and I get a local SIM card. This practice has eliminated my need for having a guide book with maps.
As for food, I am a vegan and use the HappyCow app to find good vegetarian and vegan restaurants.
As for discovering the local sites to visit, I find that this information is very easy to obtain locally.
Because of these changed habits, I no longer purchase your guide books. There are, however, times when I would appreciate some words of wisdom from your always-knowledgeable authors.
What I would love to see is a way to pay a user fee that would entitle me to get information that is included in your guide books. I would happily pay that, rather than purchase the books themselves.
