This was a timely slap in the face!

I just caught myself staring at The Mission feed and wondering what kind of story I should submit to get published there. Not that there’s anything wrong with tailoring your content to an audience, but it definitely felt dirty this time.

What’s the solution do you think? I’ve increasingly felt as though my homepage has turned into a content mill, and I’m reading (on a good day) 1/50 stories I come across. Despite this, I still catch myself writing self help/productivity bullshit, even when the original article idea didn’t start that way.

Is this something that can be fixed by a community campaign? I don’t mean a protest or a movement or anything along those lines. But there’s already a strong community just in these comments — if we were to ignore over-published mundane content in favour of promoting the content of independent writers/stories of quality (more so than we are now), would it have an effect?

Great article, plenty of food for thought.
