Ocean

The room slowly emptied

Soccer ball, bat and glove

In the kitchen sobbing quietly

And back to hasty organization

She didn’t have a place to put them

Race car, dino and plane

In her truck praying the ignition worked

And Sandy Doll buckled up

The gulls shrieking their wares

Dune grass, shells and sand

In a mind descending deeper than the ocean

And the doll on her shoulders

She took a quick look around

Volleyball net, boy and dad

Inhaling sharply to go blind

And ripples lapping against sandals

The world was just her

Caught screams, grief and guilt

In a single second flinging Sandy

And a riptide stealing him away

He floated.
