We’re actually with you here. Our Stack Overflow Careers folks actually coach companies to stop asking for ninjas, rockstars, etc. We know developers (and most adults, really) find them ridiculous. The point of their inclusion was actually meant to convey how very silly they sound — that’s why the choices descend into goofiness. At one point, there was an explicit line in the survey that actually said, “so stop calling them that, okay?”
But your point’s taken, and we need to keep watching for soft signals that women (and other represented groups) encounter all over the place. Thanks for the input, and the kind words.
