Great blog Carrie. In an earlier time I too had to buck the system to take shop class because I was in the “college track”. I gave up an unnecessary study hall to take shop as a freshman, and then asked the teacher to give me a continuous pass from study hall for the remaining high school years. I was fortunate that he recognized my passion for machines and accommodated my desire to make things. The things i learned from the hands on experiences have had a major impact on my success as an engineer. Our schools need to stop limiting the learning of students by forcing them to fit patterns and let them find their passions by experimenting with varied interests.
