A quick guide on how to care for your cactus:

If you’re a first time planter, or a green thumb gardener, I welcome you to a step-by-step guide on caring for your cactus (succulent).

Because of its pin-cushiony outward layer of thorns, it is best to work with gloves. Otherwise, make sure you have bandaids readily available to wrap around your ouchies!

LIGHT:

Like all plants, sunlight is their main source of survival, and water too. But, for these little ones, they need a TON of sunlight. Keep in mind, cacti’s originally come from the desert, and need just as much sun as it would oxygen. Over exposure of sunlight can cause your plant to burn. (Do not overheat!)

WATER:

To my surprise, cactis and succulents go through a ‘growing’ phase where they are most active and in need of nutrients and water during the warmer part of the year — summer, spring, etc.

In the cooler seasons of the year, they tend to be in need of less water. Also meaning that you can neglect your plant a little :)

SOIL:

Cactis or succulents are usually found in sandy, grainy soil. Also, leaving a soft layer of pebbles at the bottom of the pot would be a good way to filter the drainage of water after pouring through soil.

POT:

Please, please, please! Make sure your planter pot has a hole at the bottom. It allows the water to drain and flow through the soil. No drainage hole will actually kill your plant.

There you have it! A few tips on how to care for your little ones! Happy earth day, everyone!
