Vaping is less euphoric than cigarettes. Cigarettes contain MAOIs, which are both calming and pleasant. (On their own, MAOIs are used to treat PTSD and other panic disorders — which is one possible explanation for the ~70% smoking rate among schizoprehnics).
Then the teams went on to actually discover that, through a movie — a bunch of blinking lights and so forth — you could simulate the same pattern of activity. Li-Huei and I have now cofounded a company, Cognito Therapeutics, to effectively do human trials of movies to treat Alzheimer’s.
Once upon a time, California was cheap. In the 50s and 60s, it was a place where you could work part-time to fund your biker gang. In the 70s, you could work part-time to fund your revolutionary terrorist cell. Such side projects are infeasible today. If you’re going to run a massive bombing campaign out of a house in San Francisco, you’ll need to raise at least a mid-six figure seed round.
We performed a (very) rough analysis of EtherDelta trades over a sample of 2,000 blocks during which approximately 90% of EtherDelta trades executed successfully. Groups that have studied this issue in more detail have stated that the percentage of successful EtherDelta trades is closer to 79% (not sure the source wants to be quoted on this). Trade failures can result from collisions, front-running and user error; distinguishing between these failure modes is challenging based upon the information that is available to us. That being said, this data indicates that trade collisions and front-running are issues in practice…

As designers of trustless distributed systems we do not get to indulge in assumptions about ethics or an underlying justice system; we must assume that we are operating in an adversarial environment where each market participant acts rationally in their own self interest. Therefore, it is our job to place constraints in our system that make undesirable behaviors unprofi…
…bother me. When someone gets angry at Robin, this is what actually outrages me. I just want to say, “Look, to get angry at Robin is like getting angry at baby Jesus.” He’s just a symbol and embodiment of innocence and decency. For someone to get angry at someone who just wants to learn . . .
…our host will either eat your consuemr surplus or decide you’re a negative externality. This is why the Internet and the interstate highway system were the best platforms of all time: they were both government-owned, and the government takes between decades and forever to figure out how to tax usage of their services at the Laffer maximum.
