Lon Shapiro, I love you man, but seriously, when we gonna stop blaming the millennials for all of the things?
Here are things you don’t need to blame us for:
- The weather
- The housing crisis of 2007
- Any presidential election ever (why can’t we all just agree to blame Florida?)
- Reading and responding to articles. At least we’re reading.
I appreciate evangelizing, and using the platform as a way to talk sense into people. I really really get that. And what’s more is that you and I are solidly aligned, but I hate generalizations. I get that millennials don’t vote in huge numbers, so yeah, we fall into this category. Not everyone fits the mold though. I fuckin voted in the primary and my Gen X husband did not, so, ponder that. Don’t lump me into the group you’re wagging your finger at plz.
Here’s the thing — if this year that changes and our voter turnout is larger (I have my fingers crossed) it won’t be because people keep saying how much millennials suck as a group and how much we don’t know about politics, because we can’t possibly, due to lack of life experience. If it changes, it’ll be because you help all the millennials you can find get registered to vote and know where to go in November. (I’m serious, just go lurk by pokestops with a bunch of voter registration forms.) No, it changes with really great discussion over the issues. It changes with encouragement.
Feels like a slap every time I see stuff like this. I take it personally. That’s not your fault, that’s just me. It’s not just you I see this from either, it’s everybody.
Most of the time I would make a joke out of it, but it appears I am broken and can no longer harness the funny.
