My most recent take on this issue (and it may already be in others’ comments). Imagine a Catholic nun, even a nun of color, on the beach — would police insist on disrobement? No — it is the conservatively dressed Muslim woman/women being targeted. I am not a fan of dress styles imposed on women by men or patriarchal religions, but unless EVERYONE is treated the same on the beach — including those fully clothed police! — this is a clear case of selective oppression.
