Title: Beware false advertising!

Review: In his awkwardly-worded Introduction, Evan Mantyk calls the Society of Classical Poets a “major force in the revival of poetry.” He touts the “quality” of the poems being published online by the Society and claims that “all” such poems are “deserving of print publication.” Mantyk laments that “many wonderful poems had to be left out.” But as the old saw goes, “The proof is in the pudding.” Some of the “wonderful” poems are hardly recognizable as English. For instance:
Thy eyes surveying every crest and cave;
the crooked snowy paths and frozen plain;
forgot a wink, in wait of enemy knave.
A newer form will chang’d carcass take
And off the petal, yellow pollen, rake.
And while this life we passage,
Your bloom will help me bear,
My feelings for you, waiting,
Until your [sic] standing here.
The journal’s editors, Mantyk and Connie Phillips, produced some amazingly awkward and archaic lines themselves. For example:
… Quite safe amid this seas’nal ebb and flow …
Just know, despite all hardship, you are strong,
And in your heart will always be a song.
… The aching years gone by mere speck neurons …
I dashed in through the front door of the place,
A maniac who struggled desp’rately …
Indeed, I’ve traveled all around the world,
And peering down from clouds has been my head …
The tea-filled, smiling kids to me have changed,
No longer baggage, they’re endangered pets,
Some fleck of gold in each warm breath contained,
“Have they or I or both somehow reset?”
When the editors write so poorly themselves, what hope is there for the books they publish? The SCP website overflows with bad writing and its latest journal is more of the same.

Review: Evan Mantyk is filling a long-neglected niche in the world of modern verse with his Society of Classical Poets and their yearly anthology. This group of living poets is committed to using the time-honored poetic frameworks of rhythm, rhyme, form, and meter as their vehicles to carry beautiful imagery, incisive political/social commentary, and eternal truths to their readers. If you enjoy well-crafted, entertaining, thought-provoking and insightful poetry, then this journal (as well as the journals of the past few years of the Society of Classical Poets) needs to be on your shelf. If you are a teacher or professor looking to introduce your students to today’s premiere classical poets, then this book has a place in your classroom or lecture hall. And if you are simply tired of the amorphous, narcissistic, vacuous porridge that passes for poetry today, then you have found the perfect volume to renew your faith in all that is “rhyming, rhythmic, and rapturous,” as the Society’s motto states so well.

Review: Poetry lovers, this is your journal of gorgeous, traditional, rhymed and metered verse including some of the best poets writing today. Evan Mantyk is the brilliant young editor of the country’s most popular venue of fine poetry, the Society of Classical Poets (New York), and is widely regarded as the “enfant terrible” of today’s triumphant, traditional poetry scene. From year to year these collectible annual journals have delighted fans with poetry that reads like the timeless verse the world has always loved from age to age! The distinguished formatting, beautiful editing, and sheer quality of each and every Society of Classical Poets Journal make this a must-have on every shelf. Title: Comment Regarding Mr. Burch’s (1 Star) Review

Review: While I defend Mr. Burch’s right to express his opinion, in the interests of complete disclosure, it should be known that Mr. Burch has had a prior association with the Society of Classical Poets. Since his poetry has been published on their website, Mr. Burch has a writer/editor relationship with Evan and the SCP. Writer/Editor relationships can (at times) be stormy. Also, in the interests of honest disclosure, I, too, am a member of SCP. (My poetry does not appear in Volume 6; however, I am published in Volume 5.) While I don’t wish to “out” myself, because Mr. Burch has revealed his identity, I will also reveal mine: I’m E. V. Wyler, and I hope this clarification is helpful.
