Thanks you again John for this very interesting piece of writing. It made me think of a talk I recently attended with the brillant artist Grada Kilomba. The main point I took out from this presentation is that the only way white people could ‘share’ and understand the burden of racism is by accepting the reactions from the victims in any of their forms, anger, pain, irrationality (not meant as a bad thing), and any from of emotions. Rejecting these reactions by ‘protecting’ ourselves from them, ignoring them as you rightly said would mean putting ourselves, our image above the victims of racism… Feeling the embarrassment, accepting the heavy responsabilities of our ancestors in the construction of racism with all the atrocities it entails could then be one step towards, as Bell Hooks puts it, seeing society through the lense of white supremacy and once and for all fight against it. It’s hard to fight against something you do not fully acknowledge.
