Logo design: A creative process

How I design client logos

Over the 10 years of working as a graphic designer, I’ve observed that: The simpler a logo is, usually the more time and effort I’ve put into it.

Ironic, isn’t it?

Mostly, that’s what I aim for as a designer. A refined, aesthetically pleasing logo. And all that refining takes a good amount of time.

Although logo design is a creative process, there’s a somewhat formulaic approach to it.

The concept: Connect the dots.

A client came to me asking for a logo for their startup — Engaging Solutions: connecting people and businesses to learning solutions.

I knew I wanted to represent connecting/connections in some sort of graphical way — so I thought of the concept: Connect the dots — which, the client later used in their tagline.

The initial design sketches.
This took me a looong time to do, even longer than usual. I did both freehand sketches and digital sketches but I wasn’t really happy with any of the early designs.

I’m not an illustrator by trade or talent, but I’ve realised that can actually be an advantage in logo design because it forces me to focus on simple shapes and forms and not worry about intricate details.
