Why I’m Voting for Trump
John Biggs

The idea of Trump winning…

…terrifies me. The mass of supporters he has bewilders and disgusts me. The choice, however potentially pyrrhic and Zugzwang it appears, is clear

But like My Open Letter to Conservatives from Conservative Black Man, you have opened the door to a legitimate, understandable perspective. As Leonard Cohen says, everything is broken, that’s how the light gets in. Well, my (too often smug) liberal armor needed to be cracked.

A central tenet of good writing is that action reveals character, and I have found the actions and choices of Trump followers inexplicable. But your story reveals the deeper truth: good writing requires understanding the actions of a character, and that demands understanding the circumstances that compel action. By placing us inside the minds and hearts of Trump voters and the perfectly relatable concerns that drive their lives, you strip the veils from my eyes. And you remind me why storytelling is an unrelentingly powerful path to empathy and, hopefully, healing.
