How to learn anything in 20 hours (and start MAKING)

I still have much to Consider (shameless plug for my blog, Considerations — http://johncbennettjr.com) regarding the TED video, this Medium post, …

But I’m thinking I’ll have some concerns. One such concern already. The#7 suggestion to check effective learning: “Use spaced repetition and reinforcement for memorization.” I’m not sure exactly what ‘repetition and reinforcement’ has to do with ‘Effective Learning’ (don’t agree with the stated definition of learning by the way) though might fit with memorization!!! My strong beliefs: Memorization might, only might, be good for standardized tests or winning on the TV show Jeopardy; BUT doesn’t help one bit with Effective Learning!!!

I must admit that I would never though skills development are never good enough. I’m now rethinking that position through the example noted regarding developing Spanish skills through working with a native Spanish speaker. But I still have concerns: the value of speaking Spanish depends upon where you’re doing it and I believe the Spanish culture must be included in the interaction with the native speaker.

I’m reminded about the poster I remember from years ago: If playing baseball were a school course, you’d learn history, theory, physics of, basic positions, … of baseball — and maybe only then would you put the learners on a baseball field. Being a comment on the approach to learning, especially 25–30 years ago, education has begun (but, oh so slowly …) to mix learning at least core knowledge with the appropriate skills development. True for ANY career for sure; BUT I’d suggest the third part of Effective Learning MUST happen: Real world application of those core knowledge and skills (through the broad and so important skills of EFFECTIVE LEARNING, PROBLEM SOLVING, COMMUNICATING, and WORKING IN TEAMS) to address real-world situations. This third leg of the ‘success’ stool is, I believe, NOT going to happen with TRAINING FOR SKILLS DEVELOPMENT.

Thanks for sticking with my thinking — IF you’re reading this…
