“We like technology because we don’t’ have to talk to anybody” — Howard Rheingold

Everywhere I go I see people on their devices, isolated in their own little bubble. Yesterday I was eating with my friends in a dumpling house. We had to share our table with a couple due to the lack of seats. I couldn’t help to notice that they were 3 feet away from each other, not saying a word and were busy tapping away on their phones. I also noticed that once the conversation I was having with my friends went dry, one of my friends reached for his phone and was also soon isolated in his little bubble.

Even in situations where you’re 3 feet away from another human being, once when you start using your phone, it’s like you aren’t even there anymore. We use our phones as a way to escape the silence, the awkwardness, the boredom, the uncomfortable interactions we have with other humans. We like technology because it provides us with dopamine promoting brain activity without having to perform physical and uncomfortable exchanges with another person.

Introverts heavily favor the use of technology because it gives them a more stimulating activity to do when isolated from people. Without the potential of creating an uncomfortable situation while using technology, it attracts both introverts and extroverts.
