“I have an interview tomorrow.”

Few sentences are said with as much nervousness as the one above. A new graduate, a retiree, a high school kid getting his first job at a grocery store; they all may wonder what to do, what to say, to get that position.

Nothing fully eases the pain of interview nerves but, comfort and confidence come from preparation. Research is vital in nailing your dream job interview.

What will they ask? What should you ask?

Think about it. Practice it.

The first step in interview preparation is being ready for the common things potential employers throw out there and getting your head ready for the uncommon and curve balls.

Listen.

Having answers ready is a solid plan, but be sure to listen to the interviewer and build rapport to be able to provide personalized and thoughtful answers that apply directly to the question at hand from the company at hand.

Brushing up on the company goals and backgrounds can speak volumes to employers and provide an inventory of info to tap into during the interview.

Ask.

According to the Balance Careers’ article, “7 Interview Tips That Will Get You Hired”, its best to have at leas one to two questions prepared to show genuine interest in the company and position.

Aside from playing the part of informed and exceptional job candidate, its important to look it for an interview. Dress for the specific company and job, but the look should always be neat, tidy, and appropriate.

Getting the basic do’s of an interview down is crucial but learning to avoid the dont’s is just as important in the job market.

Nerves are natural but remember to breathe to avoid freezing up and the dreaded, “um, um, um.”

Nervous talker? Don’t take control of the interview and dominate the conversation with a prospective employer. Would you want to hire someone who just finished a six minute monologue about their past work experience?

They don’t.

Following these tips and tricks will surely increase the chances of nailing an interview but being genuine, honest and appropriate is the biggest key.

Keep self-talk reasonable and humble but confident. Someone’s biggest weakness is never “being too passionate about work.”

Be appropriate. Be prepared. Be honest. And be employed.
