But the absence of teachers of color — some refer to it as a “disappearance crisis” — isn’t just a problem for non-white students; it is a problem for all students. Teachers of color “can help disrupt what are often one-sided portrayals of the world and offer invaluable insight to students from different backgrounds,” says a recent article in The Atlantic.
There’s no question that something must change — and quickly. Baby boomers are retiring and the candidates who could fill their jobs are simply not there. More than 50 percent of public school students are African American, Hispanic, Asian Pacific Islander, or Native American. Yet, fewer than 20 percent of teachers are non-White. Is asking a woman on the street to smile the worst thing in the world? No. But saying nothing at all and leaving her to her business is a thousand times better. Don’t be so arrogant as to think that she owes you that bit of attention or any at all. As a matter of fact, if you’re so worried about smiling, smile at her (looking at her face and not up and down her body) and if she smiles back, then great, but there’s no need for anything more. You’ll get better results interacting with women who show a mutual interest in you than you will with women who you have to coerce an interaction out of and you’re never in the wrong for respecting her space or the right to be left the entire fuck alone when she’s walking alone in the city or anywhere else. Because who are we fooling? The initial approach is usually based on sexual attraction, right? Well, sometimes (most of the time, if not all of the time for some) a woman does not want to be sexualized when she’s just going about her day no matter what item of clothing or lack thereof you think is inviting your advance. Just stop, bro. She might be having an awful day, but leaving her alone might be the best thing you can do to remedy that. She doesn’t owe you her attention.
