Hey people?

Those who are saying “Wow those Republicans are hypocrites for complaining about process when Obamacare was passed and doing those same things now!” Those people are wrong. The fact is the ACA was not rushed to completion. It took forever to draft. There were tons of hearings. There were a lot of efforts to include Republicans in the drafting until they admitted that they couldn’t help the President. (I will find the link to a great New Yorker article at the time which described the moderate Republicans admitting that they would never cooperate.) Even so, there were more than 100 Republican amendments adopted.

What is true is that after the loss of the Ted Kennedy seat in the Senate killed their supermajority, Democrats pushed the process to completion very quickly. And yes, the Republicans then protested because they knew just a little more delay would mean possibly staving off the bill. They didn’t stave off the law but they kept the process arguments ready.

And now they are using them. But they are completely inapposite. None of them apply to the current process (even that out of context Pelosi quote). So just keep this in mind. This isn’t hypocrisy. It’s just bad policy and bad process. And equating it to the ACA process is just plain wrong.
