Edward — I absolutely agree that archives can be resources for fact checking and verification. I’d love to hear more about how you think this could play out in terms of technology or newsroom workflow.

I’ve touched on this twice in the past, but not with such a specific focus on verification. In my post on how newsrooms can use their archives from last year I talked about using archives to “add context” to current events and stories. In my mind, part of adding context was also fact checking.

Also, back in 2013 I wrote about Tyler Dukes’ idea for using news archives to create an “answer machine.” Again, this is somewhat tangental to verification but there are some shared qualities to the project Tyler proposed.

Perhaps you could write some more about how you envision this working.
