Apples and Oranges on different death time lines. The point is, users find hard or software useful and, instead of companies killing it (slow of fast), why not sell it or pass it on? Especially if there is a demand or desire.
Well, we kind of know the answer with Adobe, to make us all use crappy Illustrator CC. But, for Apple, it just left BAD BLOOD. Apple has killed so many things it makes, I have vowed NEVER to buy Apple software again. It will either downgrade to useless and/or eventually just vanish in 5–7 years anyway!
