It’s actually an interesting question, with an equally interesting back story. Really worthy of a post in and of itself. The short answer is that when Evernote was in its extreme growth phase in the early days, a big part of the strategy was ubiquity and being first. We were first on iPhone, Android, Windows phone, BlackBerry, Google Glass, Apple watch, freakin Pebble! We built as fast as possible and it was also the trend to be extremely platform specific, (Android apps were supposed to look like Android apps, iOS was supposed to look like iOS). Now as we’re moving into the next phase of of our trajectory, and as the platform game has settled down to just a few big players, these intentional differences have become design debt, which we are working on finding impactful ways to pay down. We’ll be sharing more about our global design system as it evolves.
