The Cecil and several other huge hotels along Main Street were built to house the flood of businessmen who poured into the city on trains starting in the 1920s, in the days before airplane travel. The Cecil, the Rosslyn, and the Alexandria each had more than 500 rooms, and were popular until the 1960s, when planes diverted most of the business travel out to the airport.
