San Francisco, The Apology You’ve Been Waiting For

San Francisco, you have left your bits of paper all over the floor
a cacophony of sound screaming for the less than loud
the loudest bits of paper to ever chalk a circle on a sidewalk
amidst a city not their own
but still all theirs.

I ran into a friend today.
for two seconds I didn't notice he'd left, and it had been a month and it just felt like he was supposed to be here
because this is his city
and I only love the people who leave
though, sometimes, I do the leaving.

and I will leave it all to you, San Francisco
for the first place where I felt at home
I will leave it all to you, San Francisco
as an apologetic eulogy of every poem I've written cursing your techies, and your phones, and your lack of humanity
it is all yours, City,
because you taught alien me how to be
and I love you, I love you, I love you.
