Who benefits? The gig worker benefits, as evidenced by her choice of working the gig when she could have stayed home making no money or working a more traditional job with inflexible hours. The employer benefits, as she has housework, driving or babysitting done and is willing to pay the agreed upon rate. Finally, the inventor/investor/owner of the company benefits, proper reward for her genius, risk and yes, toil. This is the American way.
By highlighting the disadvantages of gig work, you gloss over that none of these workers are under compulsion. Rather, they are making their self-interested best choice among their available alternatives.
I think a more important question is whether the gig companies are paying their fare share of taxes and fees compared with traditional employers. How independent are these independent contractors anyhow?
