The Eyes of Infinity are infinitely deep. Unfortunately, no matter how hard we look, we can never perceive more than a tiny fraction of that depth. Think of yourself in a boat far out in the ocean. All around you is the sea, churning water into which you can see perhaps 6 to 10 feet before it all becomes a blur. You know that beneath you there is perhaps 2 to 3 miles more water, teeming with life and other exciting events. Yet your chances of ever participating in that level of existence are nil. You could perhaps fall overboard, sink down, and eventually become food for the depths, but you wouldn’t get much personal enrichment from it. You’re stuck on the surface, and the deep structures are beyond your understanding.

Our media are imperfect representations of the world. Even the Mona Lisa is at best a partial reflection of La Gioconda herself; and no selfie yet taken approaches the Mona Lisa. We work with what we have: ourselves, our friends, our surround. The world reflects ourselves back to us, from the surface of that infinite depth that is beyond our perception. Cognitively, we can construct part of that depth; emotionally, it’s outside our range. Sometimes, a good selfie can show us things about ourselves that we had not recognized. We have to work with what we have, with the tools we know how to use and the materials with which we are familiar. Let’s strive to increase our capabilities, but also recognize our limitations in the face of the Eyes of Infinity.
