Being unique doesn’t mean having to be the best. While conformity might well be the surest way to mediocrity the opposite doesn’t have to be true. You don’t have to be a world class cook to step away from the recipe or even create your own (try putting clams on a pizza!). As a classical pianist I see this kind of ‘regression to the mean’ played out constantly in piano competitions. There has become an ‘accepted’ way to play the standard repertoire and as a result you hear a lot of great playing albeit not very many unique interpretations. So don’t be afraid to step out of the box. Who knows, you might end up being the greatest, you might not, but you will probably have a lot of fun. Fortunately in day and age you probably won’t be burned at the stake for being a heretic!
