We have all heard the phrase “meteorologists can be wrong half the time and still keep their jobs.” But is that really true?

Even if nothing comes from a meteorologist being wrong about the weather, the meteorologist still has to live with being wrong. Most of the time, being wrong on the forecast results in just some upset viewers that were caught in the rain. But sometimes, when there is severe weather, it could result in injuries or even loss of life.

In this case, meteorologists have to live with the guilt of being incorrect, and if there are injuries or loss of life, they have to live with that as well. They have a hard enough job without being ridiculed by the public, especially if they blame themselves for damages, injuries, or deaths from their incorrect forecast.

So, the next time you run across a meteorologist, do not tell them “meteorologists can be wrong half the time and still keep their jobs.”
