Why Being a Meteorologist Means More than Making Weather Forecasts

What do you think a meteorologist does? If you said “forecast the weather,” then you would be partially correct. Yes, they do indeed forecast the weather, but they do far more than just that. A meteorologist’s job is a never-ending one, between waking up early and going to sleep late, and getting blamed for weather that is out of their control, because, in contrast of popular belief, meteorologists do not control the weather.

So, besides forecasting the weather, what else does a meteorologist does? Depending the type of meteorologist they are, they run forecast models, conduct research, or broadcast, whether it’s on TV, radio, or social media, just to name a few things.

Looking from the outside looking in, it may seem simple and easy to be a meteorologist, but, as I stated in an earlier article, this is not true. For example, unlike popular belief, meteorologists can not be wrong half the time and still keep their jobs. Even if there is no repercussion from a wrong forecast from the public, meteorologists still have to deal with fallout from co-workers. So, next time that you think that a meteorologist only does forecasts, think again.
