Checkpoint 3: Political Parties and Politicians

I selected the Democrat side rather than the Republican side because they have most of the liberal characteristics I agree with. Democrats are the “blue side” or known as the “donkey party.” In an 1874 cartoon, some man named Thomas Nast used the donkey in his newspaper cartoons, helping to establish it as the symbol of the Democratic Party. He drew a donkey clothed in a lion’s skin while scaring off the other animals at the zoo. Democrats tend to be liberal. Liberals back a strong role for government and are strong advocates for many of the problems people face today such as economic inequality, illegal immigrants, racial discrimination, homosexuality same-sex marriage, and etc.

I selected Donald trump as my politician to talk about because he is from a different party and he is a former republican politician that is now the president of the United States. In 2015, Donald Trump first got into politics, and he announced his candidacy for president of the United States on the Republican side. He then after won the majority of the primaries and caucuses, and he became the official Republican candidate for president on July 19, 2016. After this, Trump defeated Democratic candidate Hilary Clinton which in turn made him the 45th President of the United States.

This speech was addressed by Trump when he first stepped into his first day of being the President of the United States of America. In this speech, Trump talks about restoring its promises to every citizen in America, which means him making America better. He emphasizes a lot about building a wall around the U.S. and Mexico border because he wants to stop drug trade and illegal immigration. Also, he talks about wanting America to be richer, stronger, and more confident of itself than giving all of that other countries.

Trump’s point of view in this speech is that he promises America for a better future. Here, there are many evidence that can justify this claim. A couple of lines after starting off his speech, Trump says, “ Today we are not transferring power not from one administration to another, or from one party to another, but we are transferring power from Washington, D.C., and giving it back to you, the people.” Here, he says that things will be the same, but it will be better for the people. Trump said that there were many problems in our country today, “But for too many of our citizens, a different reality exists: Mothers and children trapped in poverty in our inner cities; rusted-out factories scattered like tombstones across the landscape of our nation; an education system, flush with cash, but which leaves our young and beautiful students deprived of knowledge; and the crime and gangs and drugs that have stolen too many lives and robbed our country of so much unrealized potential.” He says that America is facing hardships in their life such as people trapped in poverty, old, rusty factories still around, expensive education (knowledge costs money), gangs committing a lot of crimes and selling a lot of drugs that has stole many lives of this country. By stepping into the role of being POTUS, Trump wants no crimes, drugs, or even lives taken away in this country. Trump actually wants America to be great again, so in order for him to do that, he says: “This American carnage stops right here and stops right now.” With this said, Trump wants to disband bad people out of the U.S. like Mexicans because he believes that what they are doing harms the United States. Those Mexicans steal a lot of lives of our country’s unrealized potential people by such as committing a lot of crimes and selling a lot of drugs. It kills a lot of people’s lives, which we cannot get back. With this said, Trump says, “ We are one nation — and their pain is our pain. Their dreams are our dreams; and their success will be our success. We share one heart, one home, and one glorious destiny.” By this, I think Trump means that if there is anything that harms America, then everyone and everything in America will be harmed such as dreams, success, heart, home, and destiny. This also means that he wants to protect our borders from the ravages of other countries making our products, stealing our companies, and destroying our jobs. This protection will lead to great prosperity and strength. I infer that Trump is tired of spoiling other countries too because he said, “ We’ve made other countries rich while the wealth, strength, and confidence of our country has disappeared over the horizon.” This means that the U.S. has helped make other countries wealthy, strong, and confident. Meanwhile, he implies that the U.S. cannot even help itself become wealthy, strong, and confident when it helps other countries. Because of this, Trump also says, “One by one, the factories shuttered and left our shores, with not even a thought about the millions upon millions of American workers left behind. The wealth of our middle class has been ripped from their homes and then redistributed across the entire world.” Probably the U.S. helping other countries was not beneficial to itself, so it left out millions of American factory workers and took away many middle class homes across the whole nation. Basically, I think it means that the U.S. helping other countries is economically unwise because the economy is not that good for that reason. The good part is that Trump said he will make all the positive things in America happen because he said, “ We will bring back our jobs. We will bring back our borders. We will bring back our wealth. And we will bring back our dreams. We will build new roads, and highways, and bridges, and airports, and tunnels, and railways all across our wonderful nation. We will get our people off of welfare and back to work — rebuilding our country with American hands and American labor. We will follow two simple rules: Buy American and Hire American. We will seek friendship and goodwill with the nations of the world — but we do so with the understanding that it is the right of all nations to put their own interests first. We do not seek to impose our way of life on anyone, but rather to let it shine as an example for everyone to follow. We will reinforce old alliances and form new ones — and unite the civilized world against Radical Islamic Terrorism, which we will eradicate completely from the face of the Earth.” He says that if America only helps themselves then America will bring back our jobs, borders, wealth, and dreams. Also with all of those, Trump said America will have new roads, highways, bridges, airports, tunnels, and railroads. With that said, more of everything will get more people off of welfare and prosper towards the American Dream. Also not to mention, but Trump is also selfish here because he only wants American workers and American products in this nation only — not even the nation’s leading country product manufacturer: China. He also says he wants to make friends with other countries and places in the world, but he is thinking all of America to himself and his people. He says he does not want to be interested in other countries first hand, but wants them to be interested to the U.S. first hand. He wants to be friends with everyone then eradicate Isis and terrorism out of this world completely. With all of this said, Trump ends his speech with, “We Will Make America Strong, Wealthy, Proud, and Safe Again.” This means that Trump wants America to be the very best country in the world. Trump obviously do not think about other countries clearly, so he sees them as weaker than the U.S.. With all of that in mind, Trump just wants to make America be the very best country with the brightest future possible.

There are also many limitations to this article. Trump does not know about what he is talking about when he said he will make America better again. By saying this, presidential powers have constitutional limits. There are governmental checks and balances that make us all more free, and Trump does not know about that at all. He is mostly unburdened by the knowledge that protest, assembly, and a free press are the cornerstones of liberty. That is why there are the words courts, laws, and constitution. Specifically for law, that importantly means law enforcement officers. Also, Trump does not say how he will implement these changes such as building new pathways for transportation and prospering Americans off welfare. He just says he is going to build roads and getting everyone off of welfare, but he does not talk about how he is going to do it. Overall, this article has many errors and weaknesses in it because Trump is not accurate and specific enough about what he is saying — it is pretty vague.

There is no author for this article, but the White House is the organization behind this article. The White House’s point of view is neither affected by conservative nor liberal political socialization because they are the ones freely who allow republicans and democrats to have them.

In this article, the White House uses logos and ethos to convey their point of view to the audience. Logos is when an author uses a lot of logical writing that are logical. Here, the White House uses a lot of logos because they states a lot of key points of what Trump promises America for a better future. Like he stated that he wants to build a wall, make the people and economy richer, make more pathways, and more. Also, the White House also uses a lot of ethos for Trump. Ethos is when an author uses his work to make himself look credible. With the key points said, they also point out factual information about Trump and his reforms. With that said, the White House publishing this makes him very credible source information to the audience.

In addition to the next artifact, this website is the 2016 Democratic Platform, which compiles a list of ideas and beliefs that govern our party as a whole. This platform was intended to move America forward. Democrats believe that cooperation is better than conflict, unity is better than division, empowerment is better than resentment, and bridges are better than walls. They are all basically saying: we are stronger together.

I am focusing on abortion on this website, and Democrat’s point of view is they are committed to protecting and advancing reproductive health, rights, and justice. There are many evidence that can justify this claim. In the first paragraph of the section, the democrats state, “We believe unequivocally, like the majority of Americans, that every woman should have access to quality reproductive health care services, including safe and legal abortion — regardless of where she lives, how much money she makes, or how she is insured. We believe that reproductive health is core to women’s, men’s, and young people’s health and wellbeing. We will continue to stand up to Republican efforts to defund Planned Parenthood health centers, which provide critical health services to millions of people. We will continue to oppose — and seek to overturn — federal and state laws and policies that impede a woman’s access to abortion, including by repealing the Hyde Amendment. We condemn and will combat any acts of violence, harassment, and intimidation of reproductive health providers, patients, and staff. We will defend the ACA, which extends affordable preventive health care to women, including no-cost contraception, and prohibits discrimination in health care based on gender.” In my opinion, I agree with what the Democrats are doing are right. I agree with the fact that democrats believe every woman should have quality reproductive health care services like abortion regardless of background because everyone deserves equality. I am also thankful for the democrats doing everything from defunding Parental Parenthood health centers, to opposing laws that impede women’s access to abortion, to extending affordable health care for every women. Democrats also addressed the discrimination and barriers that inhibit meaningful access to reproductive health care services, “including those based on gender, sexuality, race, income, disability, and other factors. [They have] recognized that quality, affordable comprehensive health care, evidence-based sex education and a full range of family planning services help reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and thereby also reduce the need for abortions.” This is good that Democrats care about people in America more than money. They want everyone to have good, affordable health care along with great sex education and family planning services. Democrats also stated that they “strongly and unequivocally support a woman’s decision to have a child, including by ensuring a safe and healthy pregnancy and childbirth, and by providing services during pregnancy and after the birth of a child, including adoption and social support services, as well as protections for women against pregnancy discrimination. We are committed to creating a society where children are safe and can thrive physically, emotionally, educationally, and spiritually. We recognize and support the importance of civil structures that are essential to creating this for every child.” Democrats want every women in the country to have a safe and healthy during and after pregnancy with services like adoption, and social support services, and protection against pregnancy discrimination. They also want the child to thrive in all sort of ways: physically, emotionally, educationally, and spiritually. This is great that Democrats care about both women and the children because Republicans do not. This way is good because Democrats ensures everyone gets the same privileges and necessities during and after pregnancy.

However, there are many limitations of this point of view with evidence. This website is very broad and it plans on many presidential reforms rather than one. The white house should make one website rather than a cluster of paragraphs for this instead. Also, the democrats also do not talk about how they are going to do it. They do not say how they are going to do things when they are already committed to protecting and advancing reproductive health, rights, and justice. Overall, the article has many limitations because they made a broad website about all the democratic reformative views, and they did not specify how the democrats will do to make great changes happen for every women in America.

I do not know who is the author behind this but it seems to be the democratic organization, judging by the website. The author’s point of view is affected because the article is written on the Democratic Organization’s website. Democrat’s point of view is affected by their political socialization of being a liberal. Liberals back a strong role for government and are strong advocates for the social safety net. Large majorities view the current economic system as unfair and see economic inequality as a major problem, but liberals take broadly positive views of immigrants, and think being open to people from around the world is an essential part of the nation’s identity. They believe that there is more needs to be one to address both racial discrimination and obstacles to women’s achievement. They also support same-sex marriage and believe homosexuality should be accepted by society. Democrats tend to generally support all of these things, and they want great change for all of the people in this country.

In this article, the Democratic Organization writes a lot about the rhetorical device: logo. Logos is when an author uses a lot of logical writing that are logical. Here, the democrats use a lot of logos because they want to help abortion for the better. The democrats talk about providing great reproductive health care to everyone. They also want every women to have affordable preventive health care with no-cost contraception and no discrimination at all. They want it for everyone regardless of gender, sexuality, race, income, disability, and other factors. They will support both the mother and the child during pregnancy and after because both are important. During, the mother will be protected against pregnancy discrimination. After, the child can be raised by adoption and social support services. With this said, they are creating a safe society where children are safe and can thrive physically, emotionally, educationally, and spiritually. They think is essential for every mother and child. All of these logical thoughts from the Democrats appeal to logos because they are logical.

Both these artifacts have a lot of similarities and differences. They both are similar by having a political socialization and serve in a political organization group. They are also different because they both fall into different political socialization (Conservative, Liberal, etc.) and serve different political organizations (Republican and Democrat). The first artifact was just the first inauguration speech by the 45th president, Donald Trump. While the second artifact talks about Democratic’s views on abortion and how they can help.

The two artifacts do not really acknowledge each other much. Both talk about different views and solutions by talking about making positive changes for our country in different ways. Trump promises America for a better future while Democrats commits to protecting and advancing reproductive health, rights, and justice.

In conclusion, political parties and politicians can influence an individual’s political beliefs by swaying them with strong arguments and statistics, and probably even talk about their worth-hearing accomplishments in life. This may influence an individual’s voting behavior by probably swaying to the other side of the political party, or even switch sides on their political socialization side.
