Thank you so much for this. I’m in the midst of drafting my own piece about the election that will have a similar theme, but mine won’t be as eloquent or entertaining as yours, because I’m not cute when I’m mad. (That’s something I should work on, because it makes the anger easier to take.)
Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one who remembers the 2008 election. She actually did say that John “Bomb Iran” McCain was more qualified to be commander-in-chief than Obama. She actually did spend a lot more time criticizing Obama and his supporters than she did criticizing the Bush Administration. She actually did claim — anticipating her now-rival — that she represented “hard-working, white Americans…who had not completed college.”
And the DNC has a lot of nerve telling us Bernie supporters how much our vote matters next Tuesday after sending us the message loud and clear during the primaries that our vote didn’t matter at all.
I’m not quite as pessimistic as you are about the length of the Obama backlash. For the next 10–20 years, sure — the white power structure will not go gently into that good night. But sheer numbers will prevail, and if we can get through this period without another civil war we will come out the other side with the world’s first truly multicultural, multiethnic superpower. (Of course, by then we’ll also have lost half of Florida to global warming.)
Anyway, thanks for your thoughtful piece and for making the difficult decision to cast a vote for RAWL. All the best getting through Tuesday.
