Hi Omari, I wanted to start off by saying I’m truly sorry that the world has made you feel so unsafe. People can certainly suck, sometimes a lot, and I hope we each do our part everyday to give people in your position the same level of comfort that all of us deserve.
However, I’d also like to make a case for Pokemon Go. I just started today, hesitant since it was a mobile game, but I figured I’d see what all the hubbub was about. I was astounded to see people, some in crowds, some by themselves, all out catching pokemon like I was. I saw people from different races, different cliques, completely unrelated people, just start up conversations with each other. Starting with the game, then just general socializing. A veteran player from the beta saw me playing from his car and asked me how it was going, then gave advice on how to play. I will concede that I live in a college town that is generally accepting and currently obsessed with the game, but I still saw more breaking down of personal barriers today than I possibly have in my entire life.
So I’m not saying that you’re wrong, that the game is completely safe, because I am in no way your position. But saying that Pokemon Go is a death sentence to black men incites more fear than it really should. Each person should judge for themselves, and maybe they’ll find their community more accepting than they think. Because in the end I think we all have the right to, if we choose, try to catch ’em all.
Warning: Pokemon GO is a Death Sentence if you are a Black Man.
