In the United States body language is the nonverbal communication we use to interact with each other. It may involve facial expressions, gestures, posture, and other forms of bodily movement. What many people don’t realize is that body language has a profound impact on mental health, both positively and negatively. However, there is a need to understand the cultural differences in body language and check-in with individuals from other cultures about their perceptions to avoid miscommunication. It’s essential to understand how body language influences emotional states and mental well-being, so people can learn to use it to cultivate emotional resilience.

Positive Effects

Body language can have a positive influence on mental health in several ways. Expressions like smiling and eye contact can communicate warmth and acceptance, which in turn can help people feel valued, secure, and connected. Studies have also found that specific postures — like standing tall with your shoulders back — can lead to feelings of confidence, power, and happiness.
