Speak up. Do not silently accept racism, xenophobia, transphobia, homophobia when you hear it. In some situations, a healthy glare is quite appropriate. Like the one I bestowed on the elderly white man at the Stop & Shop deli counter who pointed to a black woman in a wheelchair passing by and said, “Geez, dun’t she look just like Aunt Jemima???” In other situations, you must speak up with your words and your pen.
