Hysteria is a psychological disorder that belongs to neurosis. However, in this article we will explain when hysteria is considered a disorder or just an episode.

The term hysteria is used relatively commonly, especially when we hear someone say “she’s hysterical”. It happens when a person behaves very dramatically and exaggerated (for the reality of the moment). This is why we will see here hysteria as a psychological disorder and hysteria as a sporadic episode .

Hysteria as a psychological disorder

Hysteria is a psychological disorder that manifests chronically and has different physical and psychological symptoms. In the 19th century, Sigmund Freud became interested in hysteria because it was a “disease” that involved many symptoms without a direct relationship between them. Women at the time were treated with a “pelvic massage” performed by a medical specialist. It was called “the hysterical paroxysm” and its reason was that when they reached orgasm, women felt great relief from their apparent hysteria.

Freud’s research developed many interesting theories about the unconscious and this is where psychoanalysis emerged which helps to become aware of our unconscious thoughts.
