Finding that perfect balance between a career and personal life has become a common challenge for people today. Work schedules are getting busier than ever before, which often causes our personal lives to suffer. And, because technology allows us to be accessible at all hours of the day, it becomes more difficult to escape “work mode” and find that healthy balance between work and real life.

What Is Work-Life Balance?

Work-life balance involves juggling workplace habits with daily family, friend, or self-occurrences. In other words, work-life balance is about separating your personal and professional lives without allowing one to intrude upon the other. Both are important, and neither should be neglected.

So, how can you successfully maintain a positive work-life balance today? While it may seem difficult, it’s not impossible. Sometimes, getting advice from someone else can help you see the way, and Director of Operations for Thermogen Power Services and Montreal, Quebec’s Jean-Patrice Delia explains below three effective methods to maintaining a positive work-life balance.

1. Set Boundaries Between Work & Life

You can’t have a healthy work-life balance without, first, setting some boundaries. Whether it means giving yourself time to focus on job-related tasks, or resisting the urge to take a business call at home, it’s important to set boundaries so that you can gain control of your time, and therefore, enjoy that time even more.

2. Use Your Vacation Time

It’s not unusual for companies to create negative stigma around taking time away from work, however, working through vacation simply doesn’t contribute to a positive work-life balance. Rather, using your vacation time will encourage more productivity in both the workplace and at home. Simply put, vacations allow for self-rejuvenation and refreshment, giving you the drive to come back to your work with excitement — and there’s nothing more positive than that!

3. Engage in A Digital Detox

It’s truth that we’ve become slave to technology — and we don’t see the damage it’s doing. It’s even more important than ever to begin committing to reducing the amount of time spent with technology after getting home from work. Staring at a computer screen day in and day out can have incredibly negative effects on our mood and our energy levels.

Jean-Patrice Delia recommends that you try taking a step back from electronic devices — in other words, engage in a digital detox — so that you have a moment to decompress and shift into “home mode.” To get started, do it in phases. Turn off devices during dinner hour or cut an hour off your screen time in the evenings to enjoy some much needed alone or family time.

Positive Work-Life Balance: We Can All Benefit

Although positive work-life balance will mean different things to different people, there are simple steps you can take in achieving and maintaining it. After applying these tips in his own life, Jean-Patrice Delia saw positive changes almost immediately. You can only be your best self if you are taking care of it and finding a healthy balance between work and home is a great place to start — both are critical in making you a happy and healthy individual.
