New diversity initiatives from tech companies are always entertaining for me. Companies believe by promising that some percentage of their workforce will be people of color by 20XX, they’re tackling diversity on the head, and that both their peers and the underprivileged people they seek to hire will be impressed.

As a kid, I spent most of my time between two worlds. My youngest years were spent in a small suburb in between Queens and Long Island in New York City. It wasn’t rich, but it wasn’t poor. It was a predominantly black town neighboring one that was predominantly white. The rest of my time was spent in the heart of Brooklyn. Again, predominantly black, but also right next to one of the largest Hasidic Jewish communities in the country.

Everyone is afraid of something. It could be spiders, or clowns, or the inevitable heat death of the universe. For most people, fear runs much deeper. Fear is much realer. For some, fear is finally finding the person you'd sacrifice everything for, only to lose them due to your own inability, stupidity, or perhaps worst of all, just by happenstance. For others, fear is not quite knowing if you're doing well enough on that really important project at work. Fear is not knowing if the higher-level consequences of your actions match your lower-level goals. …
