How To Fix Your Procrastination Problem
It happens so often that we make goals to improve either our health, business, personal development, or relationships and we get pumped and motivated to do so… but then something happens and we lose motivation after only a few weeks or even days.
How do we change this to ensure that we do not lose motivation and continue to work towards achieving our goals?
So I’ve read a lot about goal setting and productivity, but even with that what would always happen with me is that I would be extremely committed to making a change or working towards some milestone and after a few weeks I found I would just lose motivation and it would be difficult to stick with it.
I wondered if this was just a problem that I personally have, or if this is something that effects all of us and I found out that almost all of us struggle with following through on the commitments that we set for ourselves.
Things really changed for me when I found out about using the “Don’t Break The Chain” system.
The way that this system works is that you first decide on 1–3 daily goals that you want to achieve and then you basically pressure yourself into doing them each and everyday in order to improve your life and make them a habit.
Here’s the steps for the “Don’t Break The Chain” System:
Figure out 1–3 things that you know you can handle everyday and think of the daily minimums that you have to do in order to say that you achieved this goal.
It’s unrealistic to think that you are going to complete your goals everyday for the rest of your life, so figure out if you’re going to complete each of your goals on the weekends and also if you’re going to allow yourself a certain number of vacation or sick days per year. On those days, just put a circle.
Get a wall calendar for the month and hang it somewhere on a prominent wall where you’ll easily see it and be reminded about it everyday. I’ve designed a set of monthly calendars specifically for this that you can download here.
Write the one goal that you need to do everyday in order to hit your goal. If you have three goals, then print off three of the calendars for the month and have one for each of your goals.
For every day that you hit your goal, put a giant red X on that day. What you’re going to be doing is creating a chain and by marking the red X day after day your chain will grow longer every day.
After a few days you’re going to start to grow your chain of X’s and the most important thing that matters is that you do not break that chain, no matter what! It doesn’t matter if you’re motivated or not, it doesn’t matter if you have other priorities, all that matters is that you do not break the chain!
There are a couple of caveats here. When you pick your goal, make sure that it is meaningful enough to make a difference, but simple enough that you can complete it each and everyday.
There are going to be some days when you don’t feel motivated or feel that you don’t have enough time to complete your goals, but the most important thing is that you just stick with it.
Sometimes you may not do a great job and struggle through completing your goal for the day, but the most important this is not necessarily that you have perfect quality, but more that you stick with it no matter what and that you are consistent.
When Michael Phelps, winner of 22 Olympic medals, was 11 years old he had a goal of competing in the Olympics. He was determined to make that happen no matter what.
So he realized that the only way that he was able to do this was to be consistent and started training nonstop, never missing one workout for five straight years. He is now the most decorated Olympian of all time.
So think how amazing you could be at something if you consistently did it each and everyday? You’ll be able to do things which you once thought were impossible to achieve.
