Every picture tells a (misleading) story

With the number of people suggesting they want to get out of the US, it’s going to get worse. There’s already been an epidemic of these ‘articles’ explaining how to do it and once the hardcore scammers move into the space it’s going to explode.

The reality of what that new lifestyle looks like is glossed over. (I covered the ‘can you actually move?’ issue in “You can leave here but you can’t stay there”) The rest of the world, mostly, doesn’t live like the US. If you don’t have experience living overseas, it’s easy to be caught out by carefully written ‘almost truths’

“Live like a king for only $1,500 per month in this tropical paradise”

“Spoil yourself in this hidden paradise in Europe for less than $2,000 per month”

‘Rents as low as $350 per month’

‘Gourmet quality meals under $20 per person’

They go on and on like that. If you have searched for any topic related to retirement then I’m sure you’ve seen the ads and headlines.

They’re usually accompanied by photos of a gorgeous house perched at the waters edge or on a dramatic cliff. Maybe a cute villa in a picturesque town. A luxury apartment with an infinity pool overlooking the ocean. Beautiful people sipping tropical drinks under a palm frond lanai gazing out to the…
