And the more people participate in this racism-within-the-platform discussion—the bigger that discussion gets — the more the other, messier, more complicated discussion about the structural impact of short term rentals gets shunted to the side.

Call me cynical, but with the number of obviously very smart people involved in the “approved” conversation — and the legitimacy of that conversation—it seems incredible to me that corporate hasn’t seen the “other, more complicated discussion” coming, decided that they can’t win that argument, and doubled down on visible “courage”.

Because the people who suffer from the other conversation not taking place don’t put visible dollars into the platform. Airbnb will likely soon be a listed company, therefore they will have a legal obligation to maximise shareholder returns this quarter. Preparing for a possible IPO, they don’t want to do anything to dilute that message, and social justice undoubtedly would.
