Ironic, considering those elites’ history.

An elite French historical figure is fabled to have said, upon being told that the commoners were rioting because they had no bread, “let them eat cake”. Problem solved, no? She, according to the story, literally could not understand how someone could not have enough to eat, because that was so far outside her personal experience and that of every single person she had met in her life.

Whether talking about the days before the First Republic or what may well become the Sixth, political systems work better and last longer when leaders remain more invested in the lives of all the people than in simply ruling. This is a lesson that American leaders, of both major political brand labels, have recently been reminded of. They, and we, would do well to take it to heart.
