Opinions are necessary but hardly sufficient.

I think you’re on to something. But I think that the line has been blurred between opinion and knowledge. An old saying reminds us that “those who know, don’t say, and those who say, don’t know”. The “beauty” of modern communication is that “those who don’t know, don’t care”. As a society, we’ve lost the respect for the gatekeepers that was more or less required to function in offline society. Imagine one newspaper without managing or copy editors, but with six reporters and two billion opinion columnists, few of whom read each other’s work. That’s where we are now.

You fantasise about that as a kid. You want to wake up screaming from the reality. This is the reality, and we have no clue how to deal with it. We’d better figure it out soon.
