That’s an interesting — and good! — point.

You’re right, it doesn’t need pruning for survival, but without pruning, you get really bad fruit. I.e., if you’ve ever had uncultivated grapes or apples, you can tell what they are, but they are no where near the sweetness, tangyness, or size that we see in cultivated plants.
