The difference between entrepreneurship and innovation

In this crazy new era in which people work for big companies to receive low salaries, creating your own business is a very appealing alternative. And what’s not to love about it? Unless you feed your satisfaction and ego by bragging you work for a multinational, we know the salary it’s probably crap. It’s not all about money? Granted. But think about this, when they ask you if your work makes you happy, is it the proper way to ask? It’s more like “do you tolerate your job or want to kill yourself every time your heading there?”.

So this article is basically headed for those that keep it real, positive and consider their options. The truth is that unless you have become a professional football player, a famous writer, an Oscar award winner, an outstanding singer or whatever your dream was, you’re probably not doing what your passionate about. When was the last time you head someone said: “I’m sorry, I made big plans for friday night. I paid 50 bucks tonight to see some brand new financial statements on HD”. No one.

Now I’m not trying to convince no one to quit their jobs and embrace the ‘joie de vivre’ asking for charity. Neither am I going to write anything technical or theoretical about entrepreneurship and innovation. This is just trying to clarify the way this does NOT work.

In first place, being an entreprenetur, creating your own company doesn’t mean you have to come up with a product or idea that hasn’t been developed yet. Most of the people think “what can I offer that hasn’t being invented” or “most of people needs are satisfied”. Well, the last statement might be partially true. However, there’s a wide market that you can go through without being a rocket scientist.

The idea of entrepreneurship isn’t creating a product that revolutionizes the market. Want a little secret? You are legally able to make a start-up offering products that are already out there. Yes, true story. You can sell from apples to airplanes, or just provide a simple service. One is able to offer to the public anything without necessarily becoming the next Steve Jobs .

In the other hand, it’s very important you take into account that if you create a company with the main objective of becoming rich, you’re much probably going to fail or end up going insane overthinking what to offer. Create a Company in order to acquire a decent cash flow in the same period of time it will take you to achieve a good position working in any Company. What’s the difference? You will be the owner of you time.

Think about this, why would you be working your back off making money for some other person when you can do it for yourself? I’m not the pioneer of this simple idea. It just makes sense. Would it take some extra effort? Yes, definitely. Will it pay out? No doubt. Just remember one thing: It’s what you offer, it’s just the way you sell it.
