Why Everyone Needs a Therapist

Even ‘Normal’ People Can Benefit From Sessions With a Professional

When you think “therapy” you might picture this: the stereotype of the patient lying across the long leather couch spilling deep, dark secrets that they could never tell anyone else.

In many cases, that may be true. (Although from my own experience, therapists also have regular chairs for patients too.)

Being human means experiencing a wide range of emotions and problems, some difficult to talk about, even with those close to us. It’s not always easy to bring up your guarded thoughts with someone you know well. Besides, they may show a bias or try to minimize your issue (thinking they’re helping you by doing this).

This is one of the reasons why you should seek “professional help” — something many people believe is exclusive to a “troubled person.”

That’s part of the problem. Society often believes that those who see a psychotherapist are, well… not very well. They are thought to have deep-seated issues that are plain to everyone around them. However, I believe everybody lives with some kind of issue, whether they can hide it or not.

Just because a person seems “normal”, well adjusted — and even happy — it doesn’t mean there’s not something they can work…
