I started considering my own experience of telling people what I do for a living, they often look confused when I tell them I’m an Electronic Engineer and ask me “so do you repair <insert electronic item here>?”. To which the reply is always “No, well I can repair it, but I actually create things like that”.

I think another part of the problem here is the increase in software developers using the term “Engineer” as their title. I’m not sure how things are there, but in the USA it’s frequently used by programmers and muddies the waters about what we do. Many people mistakenly think I write software for robots (or something similar) when I say I’m a Mechanical Engineer.
